Spiral Jetty Cleanup Started

Spiral_jetty_91402_800thumb

From The Salt Lake Tribune, 1/21/06: Utah officials last month removed several tons of junk from Rozel Point, the area along the Great Salt Lake's north shore that is home to Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. "Anyone who has made the trip to see the famous Spiral Jetty . . . has passed through the area and certainly noted that it was an eyesore," says Joel Frandsen, director of the state Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, which supervised the cleanup along with the state Division of Oil, Gas and Mining. Workers removed 18 loads of junk and plugged more than a dozen abandoned oil wells.

New Orions Record Store

Neworions

I was thrilled to see Orions Music has moved into the space adjacent to where they were in Sugarhouse. They lost the florecent lighting and are about half the size, but have redoubled their effort to focus soleley on Independant music. It reallly feels like they hit the mark this time. The environment is much like that of some great stores I've shopped at in Chicago, New York and San Francisco. One more reason to spend your money locally.

Your Future America

Youramerica

Yesterday was one of the gloomiest winter days here in a long time. I took this picture out my car window at 5pm while I was at a stop light. I don't know why but it kind of encapsulated how I feel about modern American box store architecture and makes me wonder just how bland we can become as a culture.

The Last Day Of Coffee Garden SLC

Today is the last day the original Coffee Garden will be open on the South West corner of Salt Lake's sometimes hip 9th & 9th district. They will be re-opening across the street as soon as they have the new space ready but for some this is a sentimental place with lots of memories.

Canada’s Richie Hawtin creates music for the XXth Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremonies in Torino, Italy

534adrichiehawtin

Minus Press Release: Olympic ceremony producers K2006 invited Richie Hawtin to collaborate with renowned Italian choreographer, Enzo Cosimi, on a key section of the XXth Olympics Winter Games Opening Ceremony taking place in Torino on February 10th. The new composition titled 9:20 was written & produced by Hawtin and will accompany Cosimi’s provocative choreography featuring famous Italian dancer Robert Bolle along with dozens of other dancers, performers and acrobats. Hawtin & Cosimi worked together in Hawtin’s Berlin studio to fully realize the drama and emotions of Cosimi's performers, building an evolvingsoundscape of sounds and effects to accompany the different movements of Cosimi’s piece. Ceremony producers have assembled an energetic program planned for the Opening Ceremonies with a theme originating around the foundation elements of Rhythm, Passion and Speed. Internationally renown not only for his music and global DJ performances, but also for his interest in new creative technologies, Hawtin is in perfect harmony with both the concept and its global audience. “Enzo and I are very much interested in pushing boundaries, both as artists and for our audiences. Working together for the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games delivers the creative endeavor to not only entertain a huge audience, but to also introduce them to sights and sounds that they may have never experienced before," says Hawtin from his studio in Berlin.

Branding Is Everything

Just came across this strange article about the very press shy founder of Abercrombie & Fitch by Salon writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis.

I found this paragraph to be rather telling:

"Jeffries alternates his grumpy defensiveness with moments of surprising candor, making him at times oddly endearing. He admitted things out loud that some youth-focused retailers wouldn't (which may be why he panicked and pulled his cooperation from this story two days after I left A&F headquarters, offering no explanation). For example, when I ask him how important sex and sexual attraction are in what he calls the "emotional experience" he creates for his customers, he says, "It's almost everything. That's why we hire good-looking people in our stores. Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don't market to anyone other than that."

Shamles plug: Salon is truly some of the best writing on the intersphere... like the New York Times for our nomadic generation.

Ouida, Coulda, Woulda...

You missed out if you didn't catch San Francisco producer/dj extrodanaire Andy Caldwell kicking up some dust this past Saturday night at the Ouida Lounge. I haven't danced that much in quite some time. Big thanks to everyone who made the party happen, especially JLuvv, the great local DJ's as well as the owners of the restaurant, who took care of every detail before and after the party with plentiful amounts of food and angelic service.

The XP10 audio pad was introduced in late 2001 by EKS, an emerging audio company placed in Finland. The product shows a great material quality and good taste. The built-in soundcard SNR (signal-to-noise factor) is very high. However the software is not available for Mac at this time.
