Br-Ides Of March

Utides_1

Teen pregnancies, bankruptcies and educational deficiency are all things that the great state of Utah excels at. The wedding industry here is so huge that it's beyond anything you could possibly imagine. They have bridal shows, conventions, planners, cake bakers, dress makers and hair-do-ers, all of which gets funneled through one of my favorite local television shows called UtahBrides!

UtahBrides is a top notch production and so I was happy to find they left the WB or whatever trashy station they were on last year and have moved into the 10pm Sunday slot on the local NBC affiliate, KSL.

For anyone who has yet to experience this joyful celebration of matrimony, you'll be happy to find the episodes being broadcast week by week from their website UtahBrides.com!

Positive Feedback

I don't mean to go overboard but I've been surprisingly overwhelmed by the wave of support we got this past Saturday night and thereafter. I want to share some of the thoughtful comments we recieved since then:

"Wicked set Saturday night! Loving the minimal vocal (but just the right amount), deep driving vibes!" – Andy

"I can't find the words in all the languages I can speak how grateful I am for the amazing party you and Nick provided Saturday night. You both managed to resurrect a magical vibe and groove that a lot of us old school gals haven't experienced in years! The whole party reminded me of old "Play School" days, and the former owner of play school aka Greg Bishop (who couldn't stop dancing all night) is in total agreeance. Although I'm still fucking sore from head to toe, it was all worth it. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You Jesse from the bottom of my heart. I'm beyond excited for what you both will bring to future parties. please keep up the good work!" – Leroy!

"Just wanted to tell you again how fabulous JWD was this weekend. The music was perfect and the energy was great. Your love and hospitality always amazes us. Thanks again for creating such a wonderful night; it's been awhile since we had so much fun." – Jocelyn

"Hi there... You guys' recent set @ the W Lounge was top-notch! Absolutely incredible. I really think that you guys are doing something here that alot of people want and are looking for, but can't quite put there finger on it until they experience it. I'm a big fan of you guys' style and how ALL the tracks you laid down are... well, just good music. Keep Up the good work. ...See u 'round!" – Tommy

"Hey Guys, Just dropping by to say you are doing the best thing in the city." – Leo

JUST WANNA DANCE Returns This Saturday!

JUST WANNA DANCE
NEW DIMENSIONS IN HOUSE

with

NICK JAMES
& JESSE WALKER

Two of SLC’s most loved DJ’s join forces at last to bring you an underground house party you won’t want to miss. Drawing on the blueprint of legendary house clubs like the Paradise Garage, Shelter and Does Your Mamma Know?, JWD gets "Back to Basics" by bringing people together who are bound by a love for music, rhythm and friendship. Each person contributes an elemental energy that ultimately helps to create something bigger than all of us. Together we... JUST WANNA DANCE.

Music has always been a part of Jesse Walker's life. His gloomy Idaho upbringing was filled with years of classical piano lessons and church choirs, all of which lead up to his providing lead vocals for a popular high-school mod/gothic band. Things brightened up however in the early 90's when he stumbled on the truly bizarre Idaho rave scene started by fashion designer Jared Gold (of Black Chandelier) and subsequently taught himself how to DJ on two mismatched thrift store record players. Since moving to Salt Lake City 10 years ago, he has been associated with almost every sound system and House club in the city while remaining a something of a true outsider. He's deejayed a breathtaking range of events that include main stage performances at the 2002 Olympic Village, Sundance Summer Theater Productions and Film Festival Galas. A very world conscious person, Jesse has traveled to flex floors in such far-flung places as Liverpool, England, Reyjavik, Iceland, Mexico City, Mexico, Michigan and Moab, Utah... always sharing his exquisite taste in music, which centers around the building blocks of Jazz, Funk, Soul and Techno. His sets continue to exhilarate and bend the minds of listeners while surprising them when they least expect it. He is a true champion of all that's good and genuine in house culture.

Nick James is one of the coolest skinny white kids you'll ever meet. He intuitively knows what good music is and has a passion to share it with others. Growing up in a musically-handicapped home, young Nick found his own way to music and culture by listening to Jazz legends on the local public radio station. He got a job at a record store in his teens where he continued to discover new music and develop his unique ear. This is when he found DJ Mark Farina through his “San Francisco Sessions” mix CD's, and says it changed his entire paradigm. By integrating Jazz with disco and house, he began to hear the style and quality that he says 75% of commercial dance music lacks. By 2002 he was ending his run of gigs in the VIP Lounge of SLC's now defunked Club Naked and landed a successful 2 year residency at the W Lounge. Now, thanks to the growing support of many and citing his recent discovery of live recordings by Larry Levan at The Paradise Garage in 79, he's coming out of a year long retirement with a clearer vision and a renewed understanding of deejaying as the precious gift he wants to share with those that like to get down.

Cat/astrophe

2652847 SLweekly: Found children’s chalkboards aren’t everyday canvases for artists. For David Ruhlman, however, it was the perfect find for his CAT/ASTROPHE PAINTINGS (a detail from No. 2 is shown below). After viewing an exhibit about children devastated after the Chernobyl disaster, Ruhlman decided to create an exhibit featuring a series of 10 injured cartoon-like cats—his unique response to the disaster. Cat/astrophe paintings @ Art Access II Gallery, 339 W. Pierpont Ave., 328-0703, Feb. 17-March 10, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Reception: Feb. 17, 6-9 p.m.

Project Runway Finale... Gets Closer

Santinofan_1

The finale of Project Runway 2 is not tonight as I had anticipated but will be shown in two halfs airing on March 1st and 8th. Ughhhh! All we know about tonight's episode is that the remaining four designers will have to design an evening dress for a superperson/model, and whoever is left will be in the Final Three.

We know that the NY Fashion Week show actually happened in real life this past Friday. And as far as Jay McCarroll, Season One winner of "Project Runway was concerned,"Santino's collection was "more than surprising, I thought he was going to have girls on fire and umbrellas and everything. I mean, I saw pins, there was mush in the back. I don't know if it was a statement like 'I don't need this, I'm a star,' but truthfully it was disappointing. I mean you have seven months, this is the biggest shot of you life and the sh-t gets shown on television, like, why are you using peach?".

Willie Nelson Releases Gay Cowboy Song

"Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other)" may be the first gay cowboy song by a major recording artist. But it was written long before this year's Oscar-nominated "Brokeback Mountain" made gay cowboys a hot topic..

Inside The Depot

Dsc01012x

I spun at the official opening of The Depot, a new live venue in the Gateway district of SLC a few weeks ago. It was primarily for investors and the media but for those of you who are curious about the performance venue, I took some snapshots a few days prior to the event. (Click above pic)

These were taken during the day which don't quite do it justice, but as you can see it is very spacious. This is just a view of the main floor, but there is a balcony level with an additional bar with a total capacity of 1200 persons. The sound system is beyond anything I've played on in the city and the stage accesibly low and wide. All of which should make it an amazing place to see a phenomenal live show.
