Old Is The New New

Johndeer

What a great discovery! Look at the original John Deer signage hidden underneath years of paint and crap stucco on this old warehouse behind the Gateway (500 West and 100 South). The questions is, will they have the guts to restore it and make it the coolest building ever?

The Rapture Is Not An Exit Strategy

Protes06

Some pictures from the protests today in downtown SLC. We commend the finely made puppet heads as well as the hand-painted "Reign Of Error" sign.

Rockyolberman_1

Rocky's speech was a bit long winded but he still makes us proud to stand for justice and true morality in this red-for-saken state. To top it off, later that night Keith Olberman delivered a truly inspired commentary regarding Rumsfeld's "fascism" comments made here in SLC. Watch Rocky's speech here and Olberman's commentary here.

Adam Bateman Explores Utah's Identity

Adambateman

Adam Bateman is a Utah based artist who is interested in "art as language". He believes that "objects, especially art objects, are signifiers like words and all together are a sign system that should be read, like one would read a text, to be understood. Reading the art-text and applying rhetorical or linguistic theories can inform the historical reading of the contemporary art world in surprising ways."

I'm not totally sure what all that means, but I do like his work and appreciate his earnest sincerity towards it. Adam's most recent project is a Utah Identity blog where, since January 1, 2006, he has made daily posts of snapshots of icons that represent Utah or Mormon Identity in an attempt to create an interactive art project exposing Utah Culture to the masses. Many of the photos he's posted thus far are quite clever, some even border on repulsive accuracy. Visit it yourself and leave comments for the project at utahidentity.blogspot.com.

Mollywood - Utah's Film Industry Booming Again

From Sunday's Salt Lake Tribune:

Twenty-three feature and TV films were shot at least partially in Utah during the fiscal year that ended June 30 - more than twice as many as in each of the preceding four years. Since mid-2005, casts and crews have been working all over the state, from Salt Lake City and the west desert to Bryce Canyon National Park and Lake Powell. "It's been nonstop," says Aaron Lee Syrett, director of the Utah Film Commission, who gives much of the credit to Utah's seasoned crews, proximity to Los Angeles and smorgasbord of scenery. "Filmmakers here can find almost any look they want, from alpine forests in the north to deserts in the south. Our production designers are really good at making Utah look like whatever it needs to be. If it's supposed to be the South, they'll throw moss over the trees." Syrett also credits a new state program that offers financial incentives to filmmakers who shoot in Utah. Launched in 2004, the program gives filmmakers a 10 percent rebate on every dollar spent in the state. It already has helped fund 16 films, including the Disney Channel smash hit "High School Musical." (by Brandon Griggs)

Project Runway is the cover story for the September issue of Entertainment Weekly. Also here's an interview with last week's Aufe'd contestant and Utah raised Robert Best. And lastly, a bit of fun with Vincent's winning creation.

Candy des Garçons

Jerri Blank For Dior

Jerridior

I was reading the Bible last night when I noticed that Dior is set on bringing back those trippy folded over, high-waisted, Q.V.R. (Quick Vagina Release, as my friend Rodney says) acid washed jeans. Jerri Blank's favorite!

Junk Mail & Mozart Visualized

Spamarchitecture7

The images from Alex Dragulescu's Spam Architecture series are generated by a computer program that accepts as input, junk email. Various patterns, keywords and rhythms found in the text are translated into three-dimensional modeling gestures.

Extrusions2

Extrusions in C Major, another one of Dragulescu's projects is an experiment in music visualization. The composition used for these images is the Trio C-Major for Piano, Violin, and Cello by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The software analyzes a range of note characteristics such as value, velocity, duration, and overall tempo.

The notes of the various instruments are differentiated by color: white for piano, yellow for violin, and blue for cello. Further differences between the compositions is achieved through the rotation of forms while they grow and produce more curvy, segmented structures.

Project Boiling Point

Pandacub

Like a sacrificial lamb to the god of ratings, our little 'panda cub' Alison Kelly was voted, quite unfairly off of Project Runway last night. So what if her outfit and styling were a little kooky? The unique creation was obviously constructed one thousand times better than Vincent Libretti's childish barf gown, uhhh... I mean, "work of fine art".

Bad producers! Boo!

Also, despite our huge crush on contender Michael Knight, Jeffrey Sebelia could have won by a neck on this challenge. His dress was highly original, well made and had interesting detail work.

Diamond Life At The Blue Goose

Diamondlifeseptweb

Me and Nick will be doing another one-off night of deeper house music on Sept. 2nd at The Blue Goose called DIAMOND LIFE. The Blue Goose is the exclusive private bar above The Depot on the North end of the Gateway. The staff are not as snobby as all that sounds however and DIAMOND LIFE should be a fun way to introduce new people to the club. We will have a small dance floor this time around I'm told, so come enjoy some sultry lounge and deep house with us on the 2nd.

Wonderwall Tokyo

Located in Hong Kong Central, Wonderwall has designed yet another amazing a retail space uniting three shoe brands in a kind of "orderly chaos". [Via: Coolhunter]

Break These Chains Of Love

Chainedbikes

I took this picture of some bikes that were chained up in front of an antique store downtown last week. The message being, love the planet and ride a damn bike every now and then kids.

Becks Breaks Ground For New Soccer Staduim

Beckssandy

Utah is getting a new soccer stadium and oddly enough David Beckham is here to break ground at the stadium site near 9400 S. State St. in Sandy. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, The announcement came after hours of roller-coaster negotiations during which the parties had a deal, then didn't, then did and so on. While the County Council still must sign off, a majority appears on board. [Via: SLTrib]
