The Antikythera Mechanism

Anticythere The Antikythera mechanism (Greek: O μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων transliterated as O mēchanismós tōn Antikythērōn) is an ancient mechanical analog computer (as opposed to digital computer) designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was discovered in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, and has been dated to about 80 BC. [Source: Wikipedia, Via: BBC]

There were more people than there was room on the dance floor but that didn't stop everyone from getting sweaty with complete strangers. Hell, my mom even made an appearance! I want to congratulate and thank everyone who made this party so much fun. Sure, Me and Nick aren't the best DJ's in the world but we live to share the music we love and JWD has made that a reality. Having such a dynamic group of friends (which seems to have grown in the process) and talented artists all coming together to support with so much positivity has been the true reward. THANK YOU!

The Final Countdown

Justwannafinalz_1

This November 25th, JUST WANNA DANCE returns ONE LAST TIME to celebrate LIFE, LOVE and LIBERTY ON THE DANCEFLOOR with all the colorful people and music that make JWD so special. What started as an intimate weekly for friends and die-hards, who “just want to dance,” has grown into one of the most talked about parties in Salt Lake City. By drawing on the visionary blueprints of legendary clubs as the Paradise Garage, Shelter, Does Your Mamma Know?, The Endup and Southport Weekender; Just Wanna Dance (or JWD) gets “back to basics" by bringing people together who are bound by a love for dance, rhythm and friendship.

Everyone is invited to come dancing to some of the freshest, soul-funkiest house music with this culturally diverse audience. People aging from 21 to 100 participate by contributing the elemental energy that ultimately helps create something much bigger than all of us. Standing for peace, love and better parties everywhere, the community that is JWD is an extraordinary collective of dancers, soul mates and music lovers. Together we… JUST WANNA DANCE!

Nuclear Waste Company New Owner Of SLC's Delta Center

Homepagegraphic995 As if this place couldn't get any more Orwellian.

The Salt Lake Tribune Reports – "The Utah Jazz is renaming its home the EnergySolutions Arena, ending its 15-year agreement with Delta Air Lines. Jazz President Dennis Haslam said Monday the Delta Center will be renamed for the national low-level nuclear waste company with headquarters in Salt Lake City. EnergySolutions operates two of the nation's three commercial radioactive waste dumps, one of them 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. Vanessa Pierce, executive director of the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah, said it now appears one of the state's top polluters is trying to soften its image."

Black Chandelier Quiet Army Fashion Show

Blackchandelier06xWhen Jared Gold plans a big event, you can always count on there being a good measure of sheer spectacle, and spectacle there was at his Black Chandelier 'Quiet Army' Fashion Show last Friday night. An hour and fifteen minutes after the doors opened to throngs of followers the giant echo chamber Union Pacific ballroom was a wall-to-wall madhouse of fashion starved freaks and geeks, leigh bowery-esque drag queens, amateur photographers and tween-age indie rawkers, all waiting in anticipation for the show to begin. The Ladytron soundtrack escalated to earbleeding volume and with a bang, a huge backlit portrait of Gold wearing a toyland tophat and tux was revealed at the end of the runway to screams of delight.

The clothes and models that followed were some of his most sophisticated and playful yet. Edwardian collared jackets and ruffled pioneer pillowcase a-line dresses and jersey gowns melded with his signature screenprinting. Costumes for an enchanted evening with the criminally insane? Perhaps. Aside from a few fabric choices which didn't cohere as well as they might have on paper, resulting in disjointed silouhettes, the amusing voracity of the models paired with an audience - primed to delerium - made this one-time show nothing short of electrifying.

Worlds Largest Mirror Ball

I1_b_l Last night at the very successful Goldmine Shithouse screenprinting party, I met a local artist named Derek Dyer who just so happens to have built the World's Largest Disco Ball called The Diversity Ball. The shiny object, unveiled on New Years Eve 2002-3 here in Salt Lake City was ten feet tall, two feet taller than the previous Guinness World Record.

Dyer, is also the executive director of the Utah Arts Alliance and ran for City Council at one point. You go Derek!

Rare Grooves

Picture_5_1 I'm not sure where I came across these guys but if your one for rare grooves and dusty disco, I highly recommend the ParisDJ's Podcast. It's great background music for the office or doing the dishes and rarely dissapoints.

The S.L. Tribune's Brandon Griggs reports that The Sky Bar, "Utah's Only ULTRA Club' on the 13th floor of the Red Lion Hotel has published a calendar full of scantily-dressed patrons, all of them Utah moms:  The calendar is called M.I.L.PH., short for "Moms I'd Like to Photograph" and a cleaner variation on the more commonly known M.I.L.F., which means something else entirely. It features photos of more than a dozen women, ages 21 to 41, posing in various stages of undress in, or sometimes on, the bar. On each page are the gals' helpful drink tips ("Shauna recommends a Red Bull and Jager") and the astoundingly creative names of their children - Daxton, Oaklyn, Rybin, Jayden, Winter, Kysa, Kylin, Daisha, Markie and Sariah, among others. Sky Bar servers are hawking the calendar for $7, saying that proceeds will benefit "women's causes." You know, nothing says "I support women" more than a calendar objectifying them as surgically enhanced sex objects. The kids will be so proud.

AERIAL: Sound Installation by David and Mathieu Ruhlman

Aerial

The Pickle Company Artist-in-Residence Program presents:

AERIAL
an installation by David and Mathieu Ruhlman

Working with found objects, photographs, sound, video, and sculpture, the Ruhlman brothers provide an intimate look into possession and loss, separation and transcendence.

Aerial tells the story of someone desperate to reconnect with lost family. Using the possessions his family left behind, he obsessively tries to build a receptor—an aerial—through which he can communicate across the barrier of death. Drawing from the fringes of science and mysticism, the Ruhlman brothers create an interactive world of failed (and successful?) experiments to ask: What unspoken connections link family and what is transmitted across those connections? Do these connections survive death? What residue of individuals is left in the objects they possessed? Can these objects serve as a gateway into a hidden field of communication with those we’ve lost? By inviting the viewer into this private space of personal discovery and revelation, Aerial hopes to reveal the subtle voices spoken intuitively by individuals and the objects that surround them.

About the artists:

Mathieu Ruhlman is a sound and video artist living in Vancouver, B.C. He has released numerous recordings on various U.S., Canadian, and European Record labels, and has performed radio works for programs around the world. He was recently commissioned for a sound installation at the Liquid Architecture Festival in Brisbane, Australia.

"Mathieu Ruhlman gradually intrudes your perceptions using subtle and faintly recognizable recordings, while luring you into a dualistic mirage that's calm and haunting at the same time. " - EARlabs

David Ruhlman is a self-taught artist, based in Salt Lake City, UT, whose paintings and mixed-media works have been exhibited at Art Access, Rio Grande Gallery, Unknown Gallery, the Women’s Art Center, Object Gallery, and the Salt Lake Art Center. He was featured at the 2005 Art Papers auction in Atlanta, GA, and the 2005-07 Utah Arts Council Traveling Exhibit.

"David Ruhlman's art radiates a sense of the fantastical... [His] brightly colored works display quiet mystery, meticulous composition and perfect balance." - Catalyst Magazine
