Computer Programmer By Day, Pansy Princess Rocker By Night

Picture_98

I'm told that Billy Squire was the epitome of hair metal ass kickery in his day but all I see in his video for "Rock Me Tonight" is resplendent unchecked faggotry. Incedentally this was directed by the same person who choreographed High School Musical, the fabulous Kenny Ortega. Watch it now.

There Is A Lite That Never Goes Out

Nitelite2x

NiteLite is coming up soon at the W. Lounge on September 15th. It's going to be another straightforward return to all things current in House music with an emphasis on futuristic sound+vision. DJ Phillip Baum is an up and coming local that I met through our nights at The Depot. As a total music geek and non-stop dancer, Phillip was present at every night of PRISM (practically) where he gave me a slick promo CD that I really enjoyed. He's got a sweet tooth for deep tech-house and weird sounds, so I think it will be a good fit.

If you've enjoyed past NCM events, please consider supporting NiteLite. Your positive energy is really what makes every event special. Click for a larger version of the flyer above to send or post on interwebs. It's going to be serious fun!

Boy With Fairytale Wings

My former room mate and SLC resident Andrew Yang has a brief, unpaid cameo in this music video by someone named Vanessa Carlton. Look for the boy with wings and an umbrella about 1:20 minutes in.

Proving Ground 2007

07_pg_big He does what?
He plays music through 5 VHS decks.
What are the movies?
I dunno - Goonies I hope.

And that other guy, he did what?
He taught himself to sing Stairway to Heaven bassackwards.
Why?
To see if “Satan speak” lurked in the lyrics I think.
…And?
I’m a believer.
In Satan?
No, in Zeppelin.

The full transcript: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children." Thanksgiving Fire

Abouttpivil

For anyone who didn't hear, Arcade Fire and LCD Sound System will be playing on September 26th at Thanksgiving Point. Somehow they were able to sandwich this event between Pig-N-Pork Day, Wedding Expo, Dinosnorzzz and the Corn Maze on their schedule. Who the hell wants to drive to Orem practically to see these great bands? Can you even get a drink? Sounds like someone didn't do their research.

Enjoy the Farm Country webcam.

Acme Burger

Picture_82

Acme Burger is the new "white tablecloth burger joint" created by Kipp Kelly who used to manage Trio, Chef Adam Kreisel formerly of Orbit Cafe where I used to deejay and Alan Ireland. Acme is in the space connected to the back of P.F. Changs. Photos, info and the menu, which does not include any vegetarian options (yet!?) can be viewed at Acmeburgercompany.com.

Of the more than 100 foreign-policy experts (both liberals and conservatives) surveyed for the  Terrorism Index, 53 percent now say that the surge is having a negative impact—an increase of 22 percentage points in just the past six months. Nearly all of the experts (92 percent) believe that the war in Iraq is having a negative impact on U.S. national security.

A bipartisan majority (68 percent) now say that the United States should redeploy troops from Iraq in the next 18 months, though most oppose an immediate withdrawal. Surprisingly, more conservatives (25 percent) called for an immediate pullout than liberals or moderates.

Overall, nearly all of the experts (91 percent) say that the world is becoming more dangerous for Americans and report that the country is not winning the war on terror (84 percent).

Kickin' It Kenny Rogers Style

Kennyrogersrules

I was digging through CD's like a badger in the trash this morning at the library and picked up Kenny Rogers Ultimate Hits album and now I've been obsessed with him all day. He was quite popular when I was a kid growing up in mountain-esque Idaho. I remember loving the song "Islands In The Stream" with Dolly Parton so much I would lock myself in our car in the garage as to make sure nobody could hear me singing along to the tape.

Did you also know he sang the famous version of "The Condition I'm In" with First Edition? The video is so stylistic! He also collaborated with Andy Gibb of the BeeGee's (on Islands, obviously), Dottie West and Lionel Richie right around the time he single handedly made Adidas track suits and Members Only jackets the hotness for the 40+ suburban cowboy crowd. Apparently Kenny is also a phenomenal photographer!

With his iconic status came the highs of success which were as far reaching as the lows (the Roasters restaurants in Asia?, plastic surgery ...awake!) yet nobody had a voice that could melt your heart like a pat of margarine on a biscuit like country music's furry father figure, Kenny Rogers.

Manufactured Landscapes

Manufactured_landscapes_big

MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES directed by Jennifer Baichwal is the striking new documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Internationally acclaimed for his large-scale photographs of “manufactured landscapes”—quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines and dams—Burtynsky creates stunningly beautiful art from civilization’s materials and debris. The film follows him through China, as he shoots the evidence and effects of that country’s massive industrial revolution. With breathtaking sequences, such as the opening tracking shot through an almost endless factory, the filmmakers also extend the narratives of Burtynsky’s photographs, allowing us to meditate on our impact on the planet and witness both the epicenters of industrial endeavor and the dumping grounds of its waste.

Watch the trailer here. MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES is playing now at Broadway Centre Cinemas.

Mira, A Star With A Comet Tail

Mira1_strip

NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer has spotted an amazingly long comet-like tail behind a star streaking through space. The star, named Mira after the Latin word for "wonderful," has been a favorite of astronomers for about 400 years, yet this is the first time the tail has been seen.

New Jesse Walker Summer Lounge Mix

Summerlounge_4

Last week I played music at a fashion show turned garden party for Lolë, a Canadian women's apparel company. It was a relaxed affair held on the patio at Caffe Molise with a runway that incorporated a live painter and models wading through a pond in five color/mood sections. It turned out nicely, and the people in charge were very cool to work with. Anyways, I made a recording of my set, a mix of summery Brazilian, Latin, Soul, Jazz and rare groove and thought it might serve as the soundtrack to someone else's summer gathering as well. If you like, just download the 'Summer Lounge' Mix.m4a here or .mp3 here (right click and 'save as'), serve up some cocktails and hit play.

Made In Utah HSM2 Premiers Friday

Easthighwildcats

That's right kiddies. With mostly positive reviews, 'High School Musical 2' premiers this Friday on the Disney Channel (check listings). HSM2 as the tweens call it, returned once again to Utah for production earlier this year due in part to the large pool of talented extras, beautiful scenery and experienced crew which includes some very dear friends of mine. The opening song called "What Time Is It?" (above) was shot at East High School in Salt Lake City while the rest of the movie was made at Entrada Resort in St. George. And while HSM2 is like a bubblegum supernova compared to the first sleeper hit, it's still pretty amazing stuff compared to the shite that passes for children's entertainment these days. It will also be interesting to see if the soundtrack does as well as the first which turned out to be the highest selling record in 2006. One of the songs from that album "Breaking Free" was even featured on an indie rock cover album called "Guilt By Association". Crazy stuff. [Photo: Disney/Orlando Sentinel]
