This cartoon brings to light an interesting social experiment proposed by Tom Ackerman. What if those who cannot be unionized stopped recognizing traditional marriage? Even if only in a cultural sense, the experiment proves a great way to get others to understand the need for equality. (Thanks Roger)

This reminded me- is anybody out there aware of what the legal status is on opposite sex civil unions? My old boss had that arrangement and I know that during the hulabaloo surrounding the banning of same sex unions in about 2004, he at least briefly lost that status with his partner. I like the idea of straight couples doing civil unions, but if you need the legal advantages that marriages gets you (in my case- international recognition of the union as our long-term plan involves moving abroad) can be obtained in civil union, maybe we could move away from marriage entirely. I hope my wife doesn't take offense. ;)
