I was proud to be on the IN UTAH float for Utah Pride this past weekend. In what turned out to be a comedy of errors, we almost didn't get out the gate due to a missing amplifier, a moment where the key was locked in the truck (that was driving our float) and then torrential rain from the get go. Thankfully the IN team came through by helping me get my sound system from home (in under 20 min... record time), and by holding a tarp over me and the equipment for the duration of the parade. We had tons of fun despite the weather and it was a memorable experience no question. The best part was taking the wrong way back to unload which allowed us to swing by an unsuspecting Temple Square. I think we surprised a couple of families on their way to church service. More about our adventure in this IN UTAH article, and more video can be seen here, here and here.
With Julius the Mad Thinker, you must "Witness the Dynamic."
This illustrious 'dynamic' was first identified by the founder of Large Music, Jeff Craven, when he invited Julius to open and close the first annual Get Large party at the Winter Music Conference. From there, John Davis, a top NYC promoter and co-founder of Body&SOUL, witnessed the 'dynamic' when he came upon Julius and installed him as a resident of Sunday Sessions in NYC. Chicago house pioneer Chip E, witnessed the 'dynamic' when he invited Julius to be interviewed for house music documentary, the Unusual Suspects, to which Julius was the youngest interviewee to appear. And NYC's Undaground Archives Choice Award gave tribute to the 'dynamic' when Julius was awarded the "Best Emerging Talent" recognition.
First exposed to dance music in the sixth grade, Julius went on to become a DJ and producer in 1994. Since that time, Julius has developed a charisma behind the turntables that can only be described as a dynamic that fills the room. Coupled with "the Mad Thinker" title, which was given to him by MC Miles Bentley of Rec Center, Julius makes no move as an artist haphazardly. Be it the tracks he plays, the order in which he plays them or the EQing which brings out a melody or rhythm in a whole new way - all these elements which comprise his dynamic are meticulously plotted throughout his improvisational creative process.
As the co-founder and partner of the internationally renowned promotional and DJ collective, 3Degrees Global, and a resident of the 3Degrees "Some Call It House . . . We Call It Home" tour, the dynamic has been witnessed throughout the most notorious clubs of house music's homeland in Chicago, including Smartbar, Soundbar, Sonotheque, Ohm, The Note and Zentra. Across the nation the dynamic has been witnessed on the main stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Marques Wyatt's DEEP event in LA, Soul Revival in Boston, Devotion at The End Up & Pink in San Francisco, Club Five in Washington DC, Pearl at Nikki Beach in Miami, Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega's Roots at Cielo in New York as well as stops in Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and France. In addition the dynamic has cross pollinated with house legends via Julius DJing alongside Frankie Knuckles, Joe Claussell, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Lil' Louis, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Derrick May and Ron Trent amongst others.
As he continues to manifest this vision in music, Julius says, "My purpose in this journey of music and life is to help others get to places that they never imagined possible, and as a DJ, I'm here to live that message as an example." - Brent Crampton

I can't say I've supported enough modern dance in my day. Recently I met one of the new directors at Rire Woodbury and she is so cool that I am making a point to see her show on the 23rd. Originally from Denmark, Charlotte Boye-Christensen received her formal training in London and completed her MFA Degree at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Her work has been commissioned in places as far as Milwaukee, Singapore and Cuba.

SURFACES wraps up Ririe-Woodbury's 45th Season with works by three compelling contemporary choreographers, including a poetic piece by award-winning New York choreographer Susan Marshall. Recipient of three "Bessies" and the MacArthur "Genius" Award, this will be Susan's first work presented in Utah. The Company will also re-stage Doug Varone's musical and witty 1994 work "Strict Love," performed to a CBS memory-lane broadcast of the 1970s, which shows a world from which certainty and uncompromised strength have vanished. The last work of the program is by award winning artistic director Charlotte Boye-Christensen. Her "Degrees of Separation" is an emotionally charged piece about connection and loss. The score by Steve Reich, with haunting human voices, serves as the architecture for this piece.

Press Release:
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28:
HECTOR ROMERO
UNDULATION 3 WORLD TOUR
(SAW.RECORDINGS // DEF MIX // NYC // IBIZA)
It’s 2009 and there is no slowing down in sight for Hector Romero. Hector has just finished mixing the anticipated “Undulation 3” compilation and in support of the SAW.RECORDINGS release he will embark on a worldwide “Undulation 3 Tour” which will take him through the first half of 2009.
Hector has also taken responsibility for overseeing and participating as the resident DJ for Def Mix Radio, a monthly Podcast featured on iTunes, allowing him to explore new forms of media when he is taking time off from touring. Each show features quality house music from around the globe and will feature guest DJ’s as well as fellow Def Mixers such as David Morales, Frankie Knuckles and Satoshi Tomiie. The show is produced and hosted by Miami’s own Birago Jones from Syndicated Beats. The show will keep its audience posted on all things Def Mix, including Hector Romero, throughout the year.
Most fans are unaware that Hector’s intro into the DJ world began at the age of 13. Nicknamed “DJ Baby Hec,” the Bronx native landed his first job at La Mirage, known at the time as one of the hottest dance clubs in the Bronx. Hector was soon spinning at a number of downtown Manhattan clubs including Save the Robots, Palladium and Roxy as well as The Red Zone where he opened for David Morales. Hector is now entering his 26th year of Djing…no longer a “Baby”.
Hector’s music industry experience is not limited to DJing. Early responsibilities included a job in a local record shop eventually leading to a position with Emotive Records. Soon after, he was abducted by David Morales to look after the day-to-day operations of DMI Records. As the current label manager and business partner to Satoshi Tomiie, Hector is the driving force behind SAW.RECORDINGS. Having great success with Chab, Bush II Bush, and Audiofly among others, Hector has earned the respect of DJs and record labels throughout the world. “Since remixing and producing are not my thing, being a ‘Record Man’ is quite fulfilling” says Hector. “But my first love, after of course my wife and daughter, is DJing.”
Hector works hard at his craft ensuring that the clubbers always have a good time. What sets Romero apart from the rest is his ability to reach the masses through his music as well as his personality. Although he describes himself as a DJ with a musical identity crisis, deep down he knows that it’s his diversity and eclectic taste that set him apart from his peers. This is what makes him a favorite with promoters and clubbers alike.

The City Weekly has moved it's website and blog to CityWeekly.net. The functionality seems better at first glance, especially the restaurant guide and now the blog is broken out into areas of interest but can still be read in aggregate form. Czech it out here.
