A Lot of Dirt and Sand

Stephanie Leitch, who you may remember from her dripping honey installation at TRASA gallery last year has a new work opening as part of a show called “Desert” at Westminster College this Friday. "Desert" is a year-long endeavor to heighten campus and public awareness of our endangered environment through dance, music, visual art and spoken word. Using the Bonneville Lake bed as her point of reference, Leitch will have a large-scale, multi-media installation taking up a large portions of the conservatory's lobby, using a lot of dirt and sand. Could be interesting.

Tickets are available by phone at (801) 450-8977 or at the door - $10 general admission, $8 students and seniors (Westminster Students $5 with ID).

Tooth&Nail Theatre's Roger Benington is back from NY to direct the regional premier or Guillem Clua's provocative political drama SKIN IN FLAMES. The play takes place in an unnamed third world country. All the action takes place in a hotel faded from its former glory, but still preferred by westerners. Oddly, it is also the preferred spot for local suicides, of which there are many, as it is the tallest building in the city and therefore offers the surest end. This rather sad phenomenon is a dark reflection on the nature of the current repressive regime and the degree to which hope has faded from the country's population. Contains nudity and profanity.

Wed & Thurs, 7:30 p.m.; Fri & Sat, 8 p.m.; Sun, 7 p.m. & 2 p.m.; 2/23 matinee, 2 p.m. More info and tickets here.

Ivan The Wonderful

Ivanlincoln

Congratulations to my great uncle Ivan Lincon who is retiring from 39 years of journalism, specifically theater criticism for the local Deseret News. Today's paper features a two-page spread with highlights from his career including this picture of him and Carol Channing whom he took me and a friend backstage to meet once. She gave us fake diamond rings to always remember that diamonds are a girls best friend. (Photos: Laura Seitz and Deseret Morning News)

Proving Ground 2007

07_pg_big He does what?
He plays music through 5 VHS decks.
What are the movies?
I dunno - Goonies I hope.

And that other guy, he did what?
He taught himself to sing Stairway to Heaven bassackwards.
Why?
To see if “Satan speak” lurked in the lyrics I think.
…And?
I’m a believer.
In Satan?
No, in Zeppelin.

Parody Hell House Opens In NYC

HellhsEvery Halloween, Evangelical churches across America stage haunted houses that replace the traditional ghosts and ghouls with real depictions of evil: high school cheerleaders getting abortions, gay men dying of AIDS, and children reading Harry Potter. Now, for the first time ever, this cultural phenomenon comes to New York City - with the Church's own script fully intact. This fall, Obie award-winning Les Freres Corbusier transforms St. Ann's Warehouse into an authentic multi-chambered Hell House of horrors. Part installation, part performance, part haunted house, Hell House culminates in a celebratory hoedown with bands in the “Christian rock” tradition, punch, and a friendly game of “Pin the Sin on Jesus.” Get your tickets here.
