Local Artists, Architects Go Global for Japan Fundraiser
 
Salt Lake City— PechaKucha Night, a creative tradition with its roots in Tokyo, will be happening on Saturday April 16 at Brewvies. Local creatives from a wide variety of backgrounds will be coming together at 2:30 p.m. to raise funds for Architecture for Humanity for the disaster-ravaged country. The event is free of charge, and Brewvies has kindly donated one of their theaters as a venue, encouraging attendees and artists alike to give generously.
 
“After the Haiti earthquake last year, the founders of PechaKucha Night organized a similar global fundraiser,” said local event organizer Tristan Shepherd. “With all the money that was raised for Architecture for Humanity, almost $100,000, they are now building a new school in Haiti. We are hoping to receive enough donations from this event to make a significant impact for the country of Japan.”

Many of the themes for the unique presentation format (20 images x 20 seconds each) are focusing on fundraiser-specific ideas, including how the world has been inspired and influenced by Japan, and solutions that help lead to recovery. Committed presenters for the event include:

Making this event even more meaningful, many of the 400 cities from around the world where PechaKucha has taken hold will also be hosting events on the same date. The presentations will simultaneously stream live, and then be uploaded online to make a database of positive inspiration for Japan. Salt Lake City is proud to be one of the cities participating in this important event. PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of conversation ("chit chat"), it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. PechaKucha was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham and their office Klein Dytham architecture has supported the movement and global network for the past seven years.
