Halloween on Windsor Street
My friend Chris Demuri works in film and television (he art directed 127 Hours...) and has been pumping up the Halloween revelry on Windsor Street, just below 9th & 9th, for some years now. Theatrical smoke flows out from behind his porch all the way down the block leading up to his remodeled modern bungalow. The small graveyard with headstones, skeletons and silly gags is something even adults are delighted to experience. Plus, Demuri gives out full size candy (like Reese's Pieces) which makes Windsor a major score for the young set.
I can usually take or leave Halloween. It's not a great leave-your-house-without-a-plan kind of holiday. The anonymity of masks can sometimes lead to public behaivoral ...complexities. But this year, being able to see the squeals of delight on frightened little faces (courtedy of a goulish Ron Green) made it a little more special. The entire neighborhood has gotten into the act as well. While it crawled with groups of trick and/or treaters, it was transformed into the set of a nostalgic Speilberg film rather than a humble SLC neighborhood.
A cab soon wisked us away to see the Disco Drippers at their 20th Anniversary show. The Drippers are probably SLC's best house band ever, offering a solid set of Disco, Funk and party jams in fine style. I wore my Freddie Mercury costume and memories were made. I do hope you all had a great Halloween yourselves.
