Sage's Cafe and The Jade Room on Central 9th
Sage's Cafe relocated and has been hopping for a few months now at 234 W. 900 S, in SLC. Further evidence the Central 9th, Granary and Ballpark neighborhoods are on the upswing. I'm so happy someone had the hutzpah to take the old Jade Cafe space, (who's latest reviews online read something like “NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN”) and give it a makeover. Most of the vegan and vegetarian favorites are still on the menu, alongside an expanded brunch (Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 3pm) and some small plates, some with a nod to the Far East like a chilled noodle salad, lettuce wraps, cashew pad thai and a 'magical wok'.
The interior space is remarkably warm and inviting, even if a little spare at the moment. Owner Ian Brandt says they plan to build out even more as time and money allows. This includes the side bar, dubbed 'The Jade Room.' An homage to the former restaurant whose signage (thank god) they salvaged and repurposed.
The new Sage's isn't going to blow your mind but it is a great start. The food has always been consistent and the service friendly. I can't express how wonderful it is to have more delicious, healthy options within a few blocks from of our house. I've been preaching to Ian to bring on the tiki madness with more bold color, low lighting and some retro-modern kitsch. There's no reason why eating with a conscious can't be super fun and memorable, no? After two great dining experiences at Sage's on 9th, you can probably count me along for the ride.
