Albedo / NIgredo

ARTISTS COLOUR MAISCH AND GARY VLASIC unveil 'ALBEDO / NLGREDO' INSTALLATION AT FINCH LANE GALLERY. ON DISPLAY FRIDAY, JUNE – FRIDAY, AUGUST 5.

From SaltLakeArts.org

Artists Gary Vlasic and Colour Maisch combine their creative artistry in the exhibition Albedo ǀ Nigredo opening at the Finch Lane Gallery on Friday, June 17 at 6:00 p.m., with an opening reception held that evening until 9:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.

Albedo ǀ Nigredo (Whitening ǀ Darkening) is an art installation that plays with the transformation of found objects—old, discarded, broken, charred and forgotten artifacts, and the memories they hold. Vlasic and Maisch are expressing their personal ideas about these objects and processes through the exploration of blackness and the lightness that can be found in the primal matter. They are keenly aware of the thin line between beauty and repulsion, light and dark and the fact that these elements are often one and the same.

The installation utilizes large scale sculptures (or shrines) that are set within a sound score of the daily hum and vibrations of the modern world. Materials used within the installation range from brass plated metals, steel, wood, rubber, stacked foam layers, and neon lighting.

Gary Vlasic is a fine artist and experiential designer who, for more than 20 years, has merged fine art, performance art, and design. He is the founder of the V. Project. Colour Maisch is a visual artist whose work is also on view in The Painted Veil exhibition at the Rio Gallery. She was also been the artist in residence at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
